What is the church of Christ?
Select another article in this series [Who What When &  Where Why How Salvation]

The church of Christ is the body or people saved by the blood of Jesus Christ (Matt 26:28; Revelation 1:5). Jesus said before going to the sacrificial alter at the cross of Calvary, He would build His church and the gates of Hades (i.e. the grave or the location of where the disembodied spirits are [cf., John 5:28-29; James 2:26; Luke 16:22-26; Acts 2:31]) would not prevail against it (Matthew 16:13-18). When Jesus made this promise He only mentioned one church (c.f., Ephesians 4:3-5). Therefore, we can conclude that there can only be one that He built. The church is also referred to as the temple, kingdom, and house of God according to these passages: I Corinthians 3:16,17; 6:19,20; Matthew 16:19; Colossians 1:13; Hebrews 12:28; I Timothy 3:15. These concepts establish the various ideals that makeup the body of Christ or His church. There is only one church of Christ.
