"Life for Life"

Joey Davis

One of the greatest shames of our society is the practice of abortion.  This of course is the common practice of terminating the life of unborn children. We are admonished by the proponents of such barbaric practices to accept, as scientific fact, that an unborn child is not actually a child at all. On the contrary, it (the baby) is nothing more than a part of the woman’s body, like an arm or a leg, not even as significant as a kidney or a gallbladder? I acknowledge that you can check your pulse from your arm but I have never heard of an arm or leg that actually had its own heart. The reality is, if you spend enough money to promote an idea and if you preach it enough, people will eventually come to accept it. We must not accept this foolish and ungodly conclusion.

Amazingly, the name of the practice that snuffs our these precious, defenseless lives speaks volumes. “Abortion” means “to bring to a premature end because of a problem or fault.” Examples that are given are the act of aborting a flight, space mission, or other enterprise. If Abortion is not the termination of life then what is actually being “brought to a premature end?” Even more so, the problem or fault that often becomes the reason for the abortion is “I am not ready to be a parent,” or “this will interrupt my life plan and goals.”

The Planned Parenthood website offers a list of things to consider for those who are contemplating abortion. About halfway down the list is the “religious convictions” dilemma However, nowhere on the list is the suggestion that Abortion just might be the taking of an innocent life. The reality is there is no “might be” involved in this matter. We have amazing medical technology that, to the honest observer, demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that the unborn child constitutes a developing human being, deserving of the same respect and consideration as a grown individual. With our current ultrasound and testing technology, we can observe the same characteristics of life that we use to determine that a person as deceased. Our society is blind by choice in this matter, not because of lack of knowledge.

It should not surprise the Christian that the Bible speaks even more clearly than manmade technology. Exodus 21:22-23 says,

If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life

Ultimately, when it comes to placing a value on the unborn, the only conclusion that matters is the one God gives. Here, He unambiguously affirms that the unborn child constitutes a human life and to take that life, under Mosaic Law, required a life!
